Feyre, oh Feyre. Finally a character I can really like. I've always been partial to the strong willed, warrior women of literature. Think Katniss, Tris, Tessa, Clary, Katsa, Amani, Aria, Lexi Matthews, Mare Barrow, Maximum Ride. You get where this is going right? So finally getting my hands on this series and meeting Feyre, has been a treat thus far.
I'm usually not one for retellings. I have a tendency to get frustrated because the original stories that inspire these others get twisted in my head and the details of the new stories are hard to follow. That being said, this retelling of Beauty and the Beast was so different and independent of the original tale that it was easy for me to get lost in.
Feyre and Tamlin's story thus far is really intriguing to me. I just finished this book a few moments ago and will be immediately jumping into the next book as soon as I finish typing this. Mrs. Maas' writing certainly does not disappoint. I was hesitant to pick up one of her books from the massive amount of attention that they have garnered from the bookish community. Now I'm glad that I gave it a chance. Her writing is so eloquent, detailed without being overbearing, clear, and so, so easy to fall into.
The only complaint I can give thus far in this series is that I feel that I'm going to fly through the next book and hate waiting for the third installment! So far so good, I'm impatient to see what the next book has in store for Feyre, Tamlin, Lucien, and even Rhysand (who I swore early on that I wouldn't like, but might be changing my mind).
I recommend this book to anyone who has yet to read a Sarah J. Maas book, that is interested in a compelling retelling, and any fans of Victoria Aveyard's "Red Queen" series. Just trust me on this.
